Food Security is a measure of the availability of food and the ability to access it. Food security exists when all people, always, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for a safe, active, healthy life.
During a humanitarian crisis, when there is a risk or an actual rise in mortality due to acute malnutrition, nutrition and food security interventions seek to improve the nutritional well-being of populations of concern by tackling the immediate and underlying causes of malnutrition and ensuring an adequate supply of food to meet nutritional and cultural needs of the affected population during the crisis.

Why is it important?
According to WFP,
• COVID-19 exacerbated food insecurity and malnutrition around the world, with a further 161 million people believed to have gone hungry in 2020.
• It is estimated that up to 811 million people went hungry last year as climate extremes and economic slowdowns, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, continued to increase in frequency and intensity.
• Prior to the pandemic, the high cost of food had already locked 3 billion people, especially the poor, out of healthy diets in every region of the world.
• Inflation, combined with job losses due to the COVID-19 and persistent income inequality, continue to aggravate food insecurity and malnutrition.
• Over 149 million under-5s are estimated to have been stunted, or too short for their age; more than 45 million wasted, or too thin for their height; and nearly 39 million overweight.

RET’s Interventions
RET promotes short and medium-term agriculture and food security measures to revive rural areas that directly target the needs of the poorest refugees/local farmers and female-headed households, while linking emergency food security/ aid to longer-term structural support.
In development contexts nutrition and food security interventions seek to ensure all people always have sufficient access to nutritious food to live mentally and physically healthy, productive lives as well as address long-term accessibility through safe sustainable livelihoods, sustainable agricultural productivity, and sustainable management of food value chain.
RET is supporting SDG 2 (End Hunger, Achieve Food Security and Improved Nutrition and Promote Sustainable Agriculture) through inclusive, participatory, and community-based approaches. In this regard, RET supports youth, women, and families to develop or improve (subsistence farming practices) their vegetables and fruits gardens, using innovative climate adaptable solutions to reducing the vulnerability of humans to the impacts of climate change and climate-related risks by maintaining or increasing adaptive capacity and resilience of young people.
In emergency contexts, RET manages the effective distribution of food vouchers and/or emergency cash-assistance for food.
